Lawsuit Against Google (GOOG) For Illegal in-app Acquisitions By Children

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is facing a lawsuit over on Android gadgets by children. In the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit is filed by all persons who paid for illegal acquisitions of game currency through the Google Play app store by their minor children. According to the lawsuit, these games are designed with addictive concept that forces children to play them and to acquire large quantities of game currency, amounting to so far as $100 per purchase or more.

In the complaint, it is mentioned that numerous games are accessible free of cost in the Google Play store but are designed to make in-app acquisitions of ammunition, fruits, vegetables, cash and virtual supplies. In this way, Google can collect millions of dollars from such deals with minors as without entering a password, children are enabled to make costly in-app purchases. The complaint also added that this all process is happening without permission of their parents, whose PayPal accounts or credit cards are involuntarily getting empty due to these acquisitions. For affected parents, the court case is also asking for damages.

The filing showed that authentication of accounts by entering a password just for once is required before acquiring an app or purchasing in-game currency by Google and allowing the user to make in-app purchases for up to 30 minutes.

Similar case is happened before which was against Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) over children’s in-app acquisitions and brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. In January, the case was closed and at least $32.5 million had to be paid by Apple to users. According to law firm Berger & Montague that noted in a news release, Apple transformed its ways so that its users must have to enter their password to make all in-app acquisitions unlike Google. However, Google did not comment on the matter yet.
