Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Motors is a big name in the electric car industry. It’s an American company that handles designs, manufactures and sells electric cars and electric vehicle powertrain components. It is believed that the latest model by Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) this year will most probably top the list of Consumer Reports for being the best car, in terms of reliability and possibly best zero-to-60 time. The only area that raises concern for consumers and manufacturers is that the vehicle might be perceived as unsafe due to its speed of zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds even though the latest launch comes with built in safety features.
In terms of speed, it’s compared to Nissan GTR super car, BMW i8 hybrid and Porsche Panamera Turbo. Compared to Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), these cars are highly expensive; BMW is priced at $136,000 and Porsche at $180,000.
Speed, being a dangerous yet essential part of any vehicle requires certain skillset from the driver to drive at high speed. Many auto writers believe that handling a superfast car isn’t just anyone’s game. Acceleration control, ability to take smooth sharp turns and the speed with which a vehicle reaches 100 mph, all require driver’s skill and practice.
According to a car research website Edmunds.com, even proud owners of very expensive, very high maintained cars never experience the thrill of speed. But what’s worse is that they never know what their cars are capable of.
Normally, it is observed that driving teachers focus on teaching students how to respond under high speed circumstances as it’s believed that slow drivers don’t require such skills because driving slow is safe enough and if any accident does occur then slow cars are easy to handle and control.
Due to this perception, most accident stimulations are set at 35mph. At the primary National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash dummies of an average sized adult male along with a smaller sized female dummy on the passenger side, with seat belts on are used for testing. The vehicle is then driven at 35 miles per hour into a barrier, creating a scenario of a heads on collision.
But let’s not forget superfast cars like Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) have humans behind the wheel not dummies. But careful attempts are being made by Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) to aid drivers.
But CEO Elon Musk promises that soon the company will cater to all expectations by the customers, giving the car semi-autonomous abilities. According to him the cars now will also be able to do tricks that other cars don’t. These include:
- The system will automatically move the car over a lane when driver uses turn signal.
- System scans the speed limit signs and adjusts car speed accordingly.
- Drivers can watch the car park itself in the drive way.
- When ready to leave the car starts by itself up and the car temperature and stereo system are set according to driver’s preference.
All these advancements will prove to be a game changer for Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) and will change the auto industry in general.
