The CEO of T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) John Legere emphasized on the matter that his company will exceed its bigger colleague Sprint (NYSE:S) as far as the subscriber base is concerned. However, the officials at Sprint (NYSE:S) do not seem concerned about the issue. Marcelo Claure, the CEO of Sprint (NYSE:S) said while talking to CNET that he is least concerned about the rankings and is more concerned about developing the fundamentals of the company and the customers and that the company does not care much about the rankings, be it No. 3 or No. 4.
Although there is no doubt that fixing the fundamentals will prove beneficial for Sprint (NYSE:S) in the long run, however one cannot help but notice that even Claure is aware of the fact that T-mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is likely to exceed Sprint (NYSE:S) in taking the position of the 3rd largest mobile carrier in the market. Mr. Legere had predicted in early August 2014, that by the end of the year, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) would surpass Sprint (NYSE:S) and would become the 3rd largest carrier in the market.
Although, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) could not achieve its target at the given time as Sprint (NYSE:S) did some intense marketing and managed to recover its loss of subscribers through which it retained its position; however, that does not mean that Legere has gone back on his prediction. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is still working on achieving its goal of becoming the 3rd largest carrier and chances are that the company will succeed in its aims any time this year.
In December, Legere wrote a blog post in which he stated that T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) will officially become the 3rd largest wireless company in the United States in 2015. He called attention to it by saying that it is a done deal. Although Sprint (NYSE:S) has been able to hold on to its position until now, the fact remains that T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) has a more solid subscriber momentum. It is the fastest growing mobile network in America.
The company added 2.3 million users in the last quarter of December 2014. For the past few quarters, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) has been consistently adding subscribers to its list, while Sprint (NYSE:S) on the other hand has not been so consistent. Although Sprint (NYSE:S) did improve slightly in adding more subscribers but the company still has more work to do. This does not mean that Sprint (NYSE:S) is not going to give T-mobile (NYSE:TMUS) a tough fight. Sprint (NYSE:S) will be continuing its simpler pricing policy on the new plans which offer the rolling over of the unused data.
The company will also work on the user retention which was previously being ignored. Mr. Claure said that Sprint (NYSE:S) has been working hard on improving its network and he believes in letting actions speak for themselves. He said that Legere will be getting a shock with the release of the network performance report by RootMetrics. Legere, on the other hand said that the date by RootMetrics is outdated and does not depict the real picture. He is of the opinion that Speedtest.net is a more reliable source.
