Quite recently, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) came under severe criticism for its treatment of employees and the working hours and conditions they are subjected to. The company plans to make changes to improve its reputation.

The director of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) UK operations, John Tagawa has said that the company has been planning to employee a further 1000 people in addition to the already 2000 employee strength since last two years.

During the past few years, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has faced a lot of criticism regarding how the company deals with its employees. However, the company has now announced that it will recruit 1000 more permanent employees in the coming few months. This extra staff will be appointed in company’s warehouses and customer care centers spread across the UK.

The permanent employees at Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) will now work for only 10 hours per week. The average pay per hour is expected to be £7.39 and after 2 years of service, the pay per hour will be raised to £8.90. According to another source, the minimum pay offered to employees at 21 years old, or above is £6.50. The company is now attracting more people by introducing several other offers, such as pension plans, medical and life insurance as well as discounts for employees. The 10 hours per week shifts, has been welcomed by the permanent employees, saving their time and money. Another benefit provided by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is giving each employee permanent status along with 3 days off in a week.

These dramatic changes have come as a result of revelations by a BBC news reporter who worked undercover at the Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Swansea Bay department, and claimed that the employees had to work at a very quick pace where they were supposed to collect orders every 33 seconds. According to the report, employees at Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) walk almost 11 miles during the night shifts that last for 10 and a half hours. The expected increase in the employee population is bound to lax the working conditions at Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN).

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has also had trouble with the British Tax department. The company has failed to pay corporation tax on its record sales of £3.3billion. The company faces severe investigation launched by EU to check the tax arrangements in Luxemburg, which is the Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) sales hub.
