Consumers enjoy discounted rates as Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) slashes prices

223

Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) recently decided to step away from a potential merger with T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS). According to analysts, a lack of trust between the two parties was the major reason behind this act. Apart from the calling off of the long expected deal, the wireless network service provider has also welcomed a new CEO Marcelo Claure, who is the founder of a wireless phone distributor company, Brightstar Corp.

Ever since Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) took its decision of stepping back from the deal, the company has been cutting down its prices and is offering a family deal with lowered rates which is forcing its competitors to take a similar step. This family deal will target families who consume a lot of data. Moreover, the company also plans to release more affordable deals for individual customers.

Earlier this year, T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS) cut its prices considerably and it is rumored that Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) has simply followed its competitor’s lead. The other two wireless giants, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) also plan to do the same. Such moves by these industry leaders have proved to be quite beneficial for the consumers and it is hoped that more price slashes can be expected in the future. Next month, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will also be releasing its new iPhones which will increase competition for service carriers, forcing them to slash prices further.

To stand strong amidst this fierce competition, companies are formulating strategies to attract the customers of their competitors. Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) offers a family plan under which if a family switches from a different carrier with up to 10 phone lines, it would be offered 20 GB of mobile data and 2 extra GB with each new line, all in $100 per month. Thus, if a family consists of 5 individuals, it will get 30 GB high speed data in $100 per month. However, this amount does not include the cost of phones.

AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon  (NYSE: VZ), on the other hand, charge a total of $300 per month for 30 GB data which does not include phone costs. According to a research, the new pricing policy of T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS) would cost $210 per month for 5 lines with 5 GB data.

Another plan by both AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) for 4 lines and 10 GB data costs $160. T-Mobile US Inc (NYSE:TMUS) has also announced its new plan for 4 lines, which offers 2.5 GB data per line for $100 per month. This plan will be offered till the end of 2016. Although, the plans of Sprint Corporation (NYSE:S) are cheaper as compared to those of others, very few people use such a large amount of data.

This price cutting war between some of the largest companies of the mobile industry is expected to continue for the coming few years, with each company aiming to offer a deal better than its competitors.
