General Motors (NYSE:GM), the company that has had its fair share of problems in the past, is facing yet another difficult situation. The recent issues have been found in the latest Chevrolet Corvette, the car with high-tech gears and features. The company is asking its consumers to avoid using one of the hi-fi features of the cars – the Valet Mode. According to General Motors (NYSE:GM) usage of this particular and technically advanced feature can be seen as a crime in a few states within the US.
What is the Valet Mode? The ‘Valet Mode’ of the car is the Performance Data Recorder of this latest 2015 dream machine. The basic secret behind this feature is that it enables the owner of the car to record any kind of conversations taking place inside the car. General Motors (NYSE:GM) introduced the Valet Mode to provide additional security to the car’s owner and the feature is supposed to be used when the car is not being used by the owners themselves.
General Motors (NYSE:GM), after it had installed this feature in all of its latest 2015 Chevrolet Corvettes, found out that recording of conversations without the person’s consent is illegitimate in many states within the U.S. It seems rather naïve that a company of General Motors (NYSE:GM)’s stature did not know or investigate about the law related to this feature. We have seen enough television and read enough books to know that recording conversations without an official permit or consent of the user is not legal in most of the cases.
This problem was officially made public and explained to all of the dealers that had purchased the car, last week. This was done on the official forum, CorvetteForum.com, where this could be read by all Corvette owners. General Motors (NYSE:GM) is doing all it can to handle the issue and besides informing all the car owners it has also asked them for a month’s time to develop a software to deal with this predicament. General Motors (NYSE:GM) has ensured the dealers that once this new software in installed; the problem will be resolved.
General Motors (NYSE:GM) has also instructed the car dealers to inform every customer who wants to buy the car about the discrepancy. Any buyer who is purchasing the latest Chevrolet Corvette should be advised not to use the ‘Valet Mode’ until further instructions have been provided by the company. Despite this knowledge, if the owner is still interested in using this feature then the person whose conversation is being recorded must be informed beforehand so that consent can be acquired.
Another twist to the ‘Valet Mode’ is that besides recording any conversations, while the owner is absent from the car, the mode also informs the car owner how the car was driven by the driver by providing complete details. Entertainment systems and any lock storage departments are also disabled when the mode is turned on; this is to avoid theft of any kind. Valet mode all in all is a highly sophisticated and useful feature, the making of videos and recording of audio is just the fun part. The basic idea of General Motors (NYSE:GM) was to create a more thrilling and pleasing driving experience for the Corvette owners.
