Graphite Pollution Increasing In China Due To Batteries Manufacturing

1468

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Prius are considered as eco-friendly vehicles but China is facing polluted rain that is very damaging. The main component of this rain is graphite which is used in electronic devices like iPhones as well as in Tesla’s Model S, Toyota’s plug-in Prius and other electric cars.

In China, graphite is mainly excavated and processed. Now air and water are badly polluted with graphite and spoiled all crops and raised worries about health issues. Dozens of graphite mines and processors are banned by the Chinese authorities in reaction in a process for fresher and pollution free air even as worldwide demand for the service is rolling.

Among other environmental breakthrough in China that includes lead poisoning, acid spills and intolerable smog in big cities, the graphite pollution is the most recent problem. Though the banning of all such facilities may enhance the ecological factors of China but it will cause damage of about a third of global manufacturing. However, analysts are concerned whether a sharp decline of graphite supplies will affect the market or not. According to a London-based senior analyst at Industrial Minerals Data, Simon Moores, in 2014, graphite prices will increase about 30 percent with the shutting down process. But that increase will not have any considerable effect on the whole price of electric cars. It is also worth noting that battery prices may fall in long run.

It is also speculated that the market for electric Model S of Tesla, for hybrid cars including Toyota Motor Corp (TYO:7203)’s Prius hybrid and for e-bikes is predicted to increase in coming years as demand for greener vehicles is rising day by day. So Tesla is planning to build a gigafactory of worth $5 billion building to produce battery packs for its luxury electric cars by keeping this demand in mind.
