Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) Executive Hit With Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Maria Zhang, a high-level female executive at Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ: YHOO) is being sued for supposedly forcing a female subordinate into sexual relations with her. The executive allegedly retaliated when she was rejected.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Friday July 11th in the Santa Clara Superior Court, claims that the Senior Director of Engineering forced a female assistant to have sexual relations with her. When the subordinate refused Zhang’s advances, the director retaliated. The subordinate, named Nan Shi, was a Principle Software Engineer and was hired in May 2013. She worked directly under Zhang. According to the suit, Shi claims that Shi was forced to let Zhang stay in her temporary housing unit – provided by Yahoo!. Shi then claims that Zhang coerced Shi into having oral and digital sex multiple times against her will.

Zhang allegedly told Shi that if she obeyed Zhang’s sexual demands, she would have a bright future at the company; if she did not, Zhang would destroy her future and take away from her everything, including “her job, stocks, and future.” Shi also states that Zhang made her work long and grueling hours, including on weekends from their now shared home.

Shi’s allegations continue, saying that when she rejected any further sexual advances from Zhang, the supervisor retaliated against her. Zhang allegedly downgraded her performance reviews unfairly for the 2nd and 3rd quarters of last year. Zhang removed Shi from projects as leader, and promoted others who were beneath her to supervision positions. Shi is suing both Zhang as well as Yahoo!. She states that when she brought attention to Zhang’s inappropriate behavior to the Human Resources department, the company did not do anything to resolve the situation. Instead of mitigating the situation, they retaliated further by putting Shi on an unpaid leave of absence, and then later terminating her employment at Yahoo!. Shi is represented by lawyer Matthew H. Fisher from Da Vega Fisher Mechtenberg LLP. They are seeking compensatory and punitive damages. In other Yahoo! related news, the company recently purchased RayV, a video streaming startup based in Los Angeles.
