National Research Posts Mixed Quarter

After the markets closed on Friday, National Research Corporation (NRC) reported mixed first-quarter results with disappointing contract value and a slight revenue miss, but solid profitability growth. Revenue registered at $26.0 million (increasing 4.5% year-over-year, all organic), slightly below the consensus estimate of $26.5 million, likely because of the fewer-than-expected health risk assessments (HRAs) for Medicare Advantage clients, which have an outsized impact on the first quarter.

The company reported net new sales of $3.3 million (a multiyear low), which left contract value at $99.4 million (down sequentially for the first time since 2010 but still up 3% year-over-year). The disappointing net new sales and contract value leave the company with some work before it can achieve its goals of returning to double-digit growth for the year and hitting midteens growth by year end. On the other hand, operating income registered at $8.4 million, up 16.4% year-over-year and nicely ahead of our $7.6 million estimate, with the press release noting that this result included the planned investment in the company’s Connect subsidiary.

The operating income outperformance was the result of improved gross margin, lower SG&A expense (although lower sales commission likely contributed), and lower depreciation expense. Lastly, GAAP net income of $5.5 million for the quarter topped our $4.9 million estimate due to the operating income outperformance and a modestly lower-thanexpected tax rate (34.6% versus our 35.5% target). Earnings per class A share were $0.13 and earnings per class B share were $0.77 (and liquidation-adjusted EPS were $0.22, $0.02 ahead of the consensus target of $0.20).
