The Salt Water Powered Quant e-Sportlimousine – Tesla Motor Corp (NASDAQ: TSLA)’s newest threat?

Tesla Motors Corp (NASDAQ: TSLA)’s newest threat, NanoFlowCell’s Quant e-Sportlimousine was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and has now recently been approved by Germany’s TUV Sud to be driven on German and European roads.

The car uses an electrolyte flow cell power system.

Visually, this car has a very futuristic look – with 2 large butterfly doors and sleek curve, you almost forget its 5.25 meters long and 2.3 tons on the scale. For comparison, the Tesla Model S is almost 2.2 tones.

Technically, it is rather innovative: the system uses a battery that is powered by cell salt water. The sport limousine contains two tanks, each of which is able to hold 200 liters of salt water fuel, and is able to travel over 600 kilometers. The flow cell system is based on the electrochemical reaction created by two electrolyte solutions. The energy generated from the salt water fuel is then transferred to super capacitors, where it is stored and distributed to operate four motors, one in each wheel.

Investors were skeptical of NanoFlowcell, which is a company that is just three months old. It seems outrageous to have faith in such a company that tooted features and numbers like going from 0 to 62 miles per hour, or 100 kilometers per hour, in 2.8 seconds. Or a salt water fueled vehicle that could max out at 236 mph.

A similar vehicle, called the Quant car by the Nunzio La Vecchia company, boasted similar capabilities. Within a few years, the Quant car was scraped, and investors and enthusiasts think the same of NanoFlowcell’s Quant e-Sportlimousine.

However, after a few months flying under the radar, the Quant e-Sportlimousine is back, and has received the approval from the German TUV Sud in Munich to begin testing the car on German and European public roads and prepare for production.

NanoFlowcell is already looking for applications of its technology beyond fancy luxury cars. It is expected that the car maker will explore more affordable vehicles, but it is also likely that they will apply their potential beyond the realm of automobiles.

The Chairman of the Board of Nanoflowcell, Professor Jens-Peter Ellermann, issued at statement saying that the company has major plans, not just within the automobile industry. The potential of NanoFlowcell is much greater than the usage in cars, and can be revolutionary to the domestic energy supply industry as well as in rail, aviation, and maritime technology. This technology provides a sustainable, low cost, and environmentally friendly source of energy.
