Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE:LUV) shares rose Wednesday, after the operator of Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways reported increases in passenger revenue miles, available seat miles and load factor for June, while traffic results for Q2 were mostly higher.
Shares are up 3% at $27.49 shortly after the open, in a 52-week range of $12.65 to $27.83. For June 2014, the company flew 10.1 billion revenue passenger miles, a 2.2% increase from June 2013. Available seat miles increased 0.9% to 11.7 billion. The June 2014 load factor was 86.1%, compared with 85% in June 2013.
Also for June 2014, passenger revenue per available seat mile is estimated to have increased in the range of 7% to 8% from June 2013, the company said. For Q2 2014, the company flew 28.6 billion revenue passenger miles, up 2.4% from the same period in 2013. Q2 available seat miles decreased 0.4% to 34.1 billion. The Q2 load factor was 83.9%, compared with 81.6% for the same period in 2013. The company currently expects the year-over-year increase in Q2 passenger revenue per available seat mile to exceed 8%.
