Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) gears up to introduce over-the-air software upgrades

11

Automobile maker Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has announced that its latest model, MODEL S, will get over-the-air upgrades soon. Which means the owners will not have to take their car to a dealer to get an upgrade. Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is offering this technology way sooner than its rival automakers; it is expected that the rest of the companies are expected to introduce it after a couple of years.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) claims that it has made more than a dozen over-the-air software upgrades ever since the model came out back in 2012.  Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) stated that they have been working on this kind of an upgrade for quite some time; their main goal was to offer its customers the most convenient way to get these upgrades.

Officials from Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) claim that these upgrades are ready on an experimental basis and if the experiments give out positive results, they’ll be launched as soon as possible. These upgrades will give Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) an edge of superiority over other manufacturers.

Other automakers are still behind in this process and they have yet to embrace over-the-air upgrades. However, it is reported that other manufacturers are also working hard to offer this feature to their consumers.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported that almost 30,000 vehicles were upgraded over-the-air this year; and that by 2020, almost 22 million vehicles will have the ability to get updated through the same method.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) explained that over-the-air updates will help save the consumers and the company a lot of costs. As mentioned before Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is not the only one; other car companies are planning to rope in software companies to develop over-the-air communication for the vehicles they have sold till now.

Red Band Software, Symphony Teleca Corp and Arynga are the companies that are in line to help the car companies in this venture.

It costs almost 4 to 5 thousand dollars if someone brings their car to a dealer and gets the software upgraded. Doing a software upgrade remotely will give enormous benefits to the customer and the company.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) connects their cars to a 3G network of AT&T; hence the customers will get a super fast update when they will update their cars to the newly dubbed ‘Software v6.0’. The updates will be available all around the world in a couple of months.

The features offered by this upgrade are traffic-based navigation and commuting advice and remote starting by using a mobile phone.

The over-the-air upgrade can prove to be very tricky technically. One wonders if all these companies that are opting for it realize that the upgrade may have glitches which could prove costly to the cars and result in massive damages; it can even cause a complete breakdown of the software, making the car completely useless.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is a well known company, having a strong reputation in the market. If they’re opting for it, it can be safely said that they must have worked on it well to assure its effectiveness.
