T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is among the four major wireless carriers of the U.S. Unfortunately, it has always been ranked last among the top four in terms of performance and efficiency. This year, however, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) ranked third among the top four and Sprint (NYSE:S) received the lowest ranking in terms of performance. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS)’s network has reportedly beaten Sprint (NYSE:S)’s in almost all categories in the first half of the current fiscal. This is all thanks to the new LTE network of the company.

When rolling out LTE in the month of March, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) said that in 2013, within six months they had launched a 4G LTE network and gone from zero to nationwide coverage. This was an amazing pace that was unforeseen in the wireless industry of the U.S. They provide coverage from coast to coast. Because of the push by its LTE network, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is now available to about 96% of the American population. By the middle of 2013, almost 157 million people in America could access the 4G LTE network of T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS). After a few months, the number increased to 230 million. By the end of 2014, this number will have increased to 250 million. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) has outnumbered Sprint (NYSE:S)’s LTE POPs (points of presence). The best network, Verizon (NYSE:VZ) has 306 million POPs. Before 2014 closes, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) plans to upgrade half of its 2G network to LTE connections. The other half will be upgraded by mid-2015.

T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) introduced 4×2 MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology in its existing LTE towers. This means that the LTE towers now transmit 4 signals to smartphones instead of 2. As a result, the LTE signals have become more reliable, consistent and strong. The 4×2 technology also increases upload speeds of the data. This technology is not available throughout the LTE network; it is only available to boost the signals in San Antario, Dallas and Chicago.

The reason for expansion of technology is that T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) still lags behind Sprint (NYSE:S) in terms of reliability. By the end of 2013, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) was just 8 points lower than Sprint (NYSE:S) for reliability. Now, it is less than 1 point below Sprint (NYSE:S).

Thanks to LTE expansion, T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) has established a large customer base over the previous year. It is now just little behind Sprint (NYSE:S) in terms of number of customers. If you look at the growth paces of all four U.S. wireless carriers under discussion, then T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) outpaces all of them. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) is almost about to reach the subscriber count of Sprint (NYSE:S), and may potentially cross it.

A few years ago it seemed that T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) did not have much of a bright future. But recently, the company has launched subscriber campaigns, started an LTE network and changed their marketing tactics to show the world what they are made of. The company is now close to ranking number three in the top wireless network provides of the U.S. T-Mobile (NYSE:TMUS) has definitely surprised everyone.
