Smartphones Resemblance Revealed after Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Strip down

Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) has come up with a breathtaking 17-inch touch screen infotainment system in Model S. Compared to bulky infotainment systems of conventional cars this is truly an amazing experience. In order to understand how Tesla achieved this, teardown of Model S computing system revealed that it is inclined towards smartphone and tablets design instead of traditional systems, which ultimately explained the mystery.

In the last decade, touch screen devices have brought revolution in every sphere of life. However, its seamless integration in the automobile industry was lacking since automakers found it difficult to come up with a car infotainment system fully meeting users’ requirements. Model S has been able to raise the bar for these systems despite strengths and weakness of traditional infotainment systems. So now the touchscreen controls every system in Model S except the hazard lights which have manual buttons as per the law. In contrast the Kia Soul has multiple redundancies incorporated on top of each other with not less than 42 buttons on its center console only. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s design has ensured that traditional carmakers can no longer make old-fashioned infotainment system as industry standard.

IHS Technology bought a Model S from the auction with the sole purpose to study each and every system through strip analysis. It was evident after the study that Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) benefited from smartphones and tablets while designing its driver system. In a report released by IHS Technology, senior director (Materials and Cost benchmarking) Andrew Rassweiler elaborated that every aspect of the Tesla design reveals greater similarities to media tablets and expensive smartphone instead of traditional automobiles whether it is usage of large displays in the car, controls operated by touch screen, mobile microchips or cost composition of the electronics. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has fundamentally moved away from traditional automobile market concepts to provide its users with a delightful experience through on board electronics in Model S.

The central touchscreen in Model S stands out with a size of 17-inches, enormously larger than traditional touchscreen by at least 10-inches. This indicates Tesla’s intentional design preference to introduce a phenomenal size touchscreen, which is definitely costly.  This concept along with the decision to ensure in-house design and manufacturing of majority of infotainment system are proving successful. So Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) is in better control of the design and manufacturing process as compared to other automakers which heavily rely on other suppliers and manufacturers to provide them systems. However, it is not possible for Tesla to manufacture everything, like touchscreen is made by TPK Holdings which provided touchscreens for first generation Apple iPhones.

The immense power of computation, which Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been able to put onboard Model S is yet another obvious advantage over other car manufacturers. Every digital button provides a sharper and 3-D appearance thanks to an NVIDIA graphics processor which drives 12.3-inch gauge cluster display and 17-inch touchscreen. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has introduced a much powerful Tegra 3computer processor, whereas other luxury automakers are still using of Tegra 2, which was launched in 2010 and is history now.
