Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle’s Software Update is Available with New Features for its Readers

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) introduced the trend of e-reading via Kindle. Amazon Kindle are e-book readers. These are basically devices that are dedicated for reading electronic books, hence, e-reading. Using the Kindle, you can shop for books, magazines, newspapers and blog. You can also browse through books, download them and read them on Kindle. The Kindle has the ability to wirelessly connect to the Internet.

Kindle was developed by Lab126, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). It was a single device, but has now flourished into a range of different devices. Kindle includes e-readers with E-Ink paper display screens and tablets, that use Android OS, with colored, LCD screens.

Originally, the Kindle was introduced in 2007, from which it evolved into Kindle DX in 2009. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) introduced Kindle software to be used on different platforms like Windows, iOS, Blackberry and Android.

Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) started rolling out an update to for Kindle on Friday. The company introduced new features for the e-readers. The update will soon be available to old Kindles so that the older users can enjoy the new features too.

The new features introduced by Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) in e-reading are:

  • Enhanced Search

It allows you to pull search results from your library, Goodreads and online Kindle Store. Previously you could only search in your library.

  • Word Wise

This feature allows the definition of difficult words to automatically appear above them. This way you don’t have to stop reading and open a dictionary app to find the meanings of the words.

  • Family Library

Your family members who are linked to your account on Amazon.com will be able to read the books that you have downloaded.

  • About This Book

This feature gives information about the book, such as the biography of the author(s) and other parts of the book in the series if they exist.

Some of the old features are also enhanced into new features by Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN). These old features include X-Ray and also the ability of your Kindle to tap into different subscriptions on Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), such as Kindle Unlimited.  The new update improves the integration with Goodreads as well.

However, there are some e-readers who will not be able to get the new update. These will be the ones who are using first generation of Kindle, i.e. the models that were bought in either 2012, or the first six months of 2013. These e-readers cannot update from their version 5.4.4. Meanwhile the newer models like Kindle Voyage, Paperwhite and the latest Kindle model will all be able to update to the new version 5.6.1.

If you are impatient and unable to wait for long for the new features then do not fret! Just get the update file from Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), connect your Kindle to your computer, copy the file to the Kindle and manually install it. You will be able to use all the new features that are described above!
