Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has released a diversity report – the first ever of the company. Following the report, other companies, like Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB), have also released their data about demographics of their workforces. The numbers released are not very surprising. Like all of its competition, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s workforce has a majority of men and white employees. However, a closer look at the reports and careful comparison to other companies revealed that the number of black employees and Hispanics that are working for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is much larger than expected.

55% of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s workforce in the U.S. comprises of white people. This number is easily comparable to those of other technology companies. In other companies, the percentage of white employees ranges between 50 and 60%. However, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s numbers give it a unique position – the number of Asian employees is far smaller than those of other companies. In Yahoo Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) the percentage of Asian employees is 39% whereas that in Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is about 30%. In Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), the ratio of Asian employees is only 15%. This difference in numbers is made up by the Black and Hispanic workers – they constitute about 18% of the workforce at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) in U.S. The number is not very large, however it is much larger compared to the percentage of Hispanics and Blacks in other tech companies that add up to a total of almost 5 or 6%.

This huge difference in numbers between Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and its competition can be due to the fact that the company has a larger number of retail employees. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s data clearly supports this conclusion – most of the Hispanics and Blacks are appointed in non-technical positions in the company. This is good news on the company’s part that it has a greater population of minority employees as compared to other companies. Yet, Tim Cook, the CEO, says that the company is yet to progress. He said that the numbers do not impress him considering how hard the company has been working in order to improve them.

Like other companies, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) also has to work towards the future. The company has a thing for presentation; for almost ten years, Steve Jobs kept revealing some new item in the end. So, keeping this trend alive, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) revealed a very nice video along with the report. In the video, the company claims that this diversity in their workforce serves as an inspiration. He said that the company does not define diversity based only on race, ethnicity and gender. It also includes immeasurable personal qualities like disabilities and veteran status. He said that a person’s origins, where he comes from, what he experienced in the past, influences his perception of things and the way he approaches a problem that befalls him; this is why the company favors such qualities in diversity. The company is looking forward to investing to focus on diversity.
