Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s latest iOS makes its debut

In the year 2013 everyone wanted to be the first one to download the new software, iOS7. The new software by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) offered visual change that got its users’ attention. iOS8 however does not offer such significant visual changes on the surface, but it has a lot more to offer in terms of functionality.

People who are on their cell phones 24/7 would love this new upgrade, and Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Mac OS X upgrade also known as Yosemite seems to be very promising as well; however it will not hit the market until next month. Also, most of the apps being used by iOS users will need to be upgraded in order to become compatible with the features of iOS8.

Although there is no harm in getting the upgrade right now, but even if you decide to wait for a bit longer you would not be missing out on anything substantial.

Is the iOS8 attainable?

The general answer to this question would be yes; as it is true that every iPad and iPhone after the 4s would work fine with the new iOS8, however the first generation iPad and all iPhones before iPhone 4s will not be able to enjoy the new operating system.

This means that the four year old version of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) phones will not be compatible with the iOS8 either. Also the series of 5th generation iPod Touch will be the only model that will work with iOS upgrade. The Touch hasn’t been using the old technology for a while now and therefore will work with the iOS8 without any hassle.

Backup and iCloud storage upgrade

Although the upgrades are usually free of risk, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Creating an iCloud or iTunes backup prior to the upgrade is always a good idea. Here’s how you can proceed – go to settings -> iCloud -> storage and backup.

Do look at the screen before pressing the backup button, as there will be a line called “total storage” and below that message would be the storage “available”. If the total displayed space available is in MB, you will need a new plan. In some cases however you might need a new plan even if the available space is in GB depending on how heavy the backup is.

Upgrade and wait for the iOS8

To get the upgrade, hit General -> Software upgrade -> Install now. If you have a pass code you will need it now, enter the pass code and wait.

Once the upgrade is complete, many of the apps will receive automatic upgrades as well. If the automatic upgrades are not activated for your apps then you will have to go to Settings -> iTunes and App store -> Updates. Most of the upgraded apps work well with an exception of a few like ESPN etc.

One of the iOS8 features has an offer of replacing the old keyboard with a new one like Swype, which many would consider an excellent offer.

Overall iOS users will enjoy the new upgrade, but may miss an entirely new look.
