AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T): The 1Gbps Promise Fulfilled

191

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has finally fulfilled the promise made to its Austin, Texas users regarding the 1Gbps speed. The commitment for the highly efficient GigaPower fiber-based broadband service was made last year when the service started. This announcement for a speedier service was made by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) in April 2013 right after Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) revealed their intention of 1Gbps speed for an approximate $70 every month. Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) inaugurated their Google Fiber broadband service in July 2012 in Kansas City and since then, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) is efficiently combating the challenge set.

Reports as latest as those from yesterday i.e. the 11th of August 2014 have stated that the company seems to be all set to accomplish what they committed to. New subscribers will now be able to access speed of 1Gbps and clients who have already been using AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) will experience an automatic upgrade from 300Mbps to 1Gbps speed, the best part being that this promotion shall not be accompanied by any extra cost. The normal packages for these services are at a starting price of $70 for one month. The network upgrade is part of the Project Velocity IP investment plan compiled by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T).

In December 2013, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) introduced the fiber-based GigaPower service but were unsuccessful in providing the promised 1Gbps speed. The strategy did not turn out as flawless as perceived and thus had to be halted with consolation to its users to hang on to the 300 Mbps speed and promises of a definite upgrade in 2014. AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) is now making that happen.

In April of this year, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) revealed that this GigaPower service for 1Gbps they were offering would not be limited to a few big cities but to 100 cities and about 25 markets across the United States. To date, this plan has been made resolute in about 27 cities and 11 markets. In North Carolina, these cities are Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte and Winston-Salem; in Texas these include Dallas, Houston, Fort Worth and San Antonio; Nashville, Tenn., Overland Park in Kansas. More would be disclosed in the coming months.

As mentioned before, the $70 price set by AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) was to match the one set by Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) in the city of Kansas. However, this price is only for customers who agree to a contract of one year in addition to permitting AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) to keep a track of data used. This $70 price would remain consistent for up to three years and users can discontinue the data usage tracking service after one year. Users who are not willing to let AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) use the datausage tracking feature are to pay $100 if they wish to utilize the 1Gbps speed. Of course, prices increase with the addition of TV and phone services.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has also proposed to its Austin customers, the option to agree to a new wireless contract. Those customers who are in agreement would be given credit on the AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) bills worth $100. This offer began on August 11, 2014 and will continue till November 8 of this year and is only applicable if customers have had the GigaPower service as well as the wireless service for forty five days.
