Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Band is Not all that

16

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT), the tech giant, released their fitness tracker band in the U.S. Many people have used the band and shared their experiences. The Microsoft Band is a fitness tracker with several innovative features that include a GPS device and synchronization with your smartphone so that you can see your notifications on its screen. The screen on the band displays data related to your health, like your heart rate and the distance that you have run or walked.

Many testers of Microsoft Band shared the same problem – they were not comfortable wearing it. PC World’s Jon Phillips said that the band was uncomfortable and compared the experience with being forced to wear an ankle bracelet by the police.

Molly Wood from New York Times had similar views. According to her the source of discomfort was the screen on the top of wrist. The rectangular screen cannot bend along with the movements of the wrist, which is very disturbing.

Many are questioning Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s motives behind making a fitness tracker. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT), the creator of Windows, Office and Xbox. It is possible that the company is simply following its strategy to focus on cloud and devices; they produced a device that connects to the cloud and can be worn around the wrist to give you data relevant to your health.

Fans of Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) pointed out that Microsoft Band is sold out on the official, company’s online store. However, the actual number of bands that were sold out, is not being disclosed. Skeptics believe that the company had not even produced a lot of copies of the band and that very few people, outside the company, would have bought the band.

According to reviewers, the band is very ugly and clunky. The screen is not curved which causes a lot of discomfort as mentioned above. Another major problem is that the heart monitoring device, embedded in the band, is not accurate. Wearable devices must either fit in or wrap around snugly.

While a computer can function beautifully and acceptably, look ugly at the same time, wearable devices cannot. They must look good and function well too. This is a time when designer skills come cost a premium. Even though the device incorporates a lot of functionality, this still does not make up for the ugliness of the device.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has never had to impress with their abilities in the field of wearable devices, and they haven’t impressed anyone either. The company, however, is making improvements in the line of tablets – Surface. This shows that they are improving and refining their skills.

It is not too difficult to see that only those companies can potentially survive in the world of wearable devices that integrate excellent hardware design features with the best software using the latest technologies. However, these are the early days of wearable tech. There is still a very long way to go and who knows what might happen in the future.
